A day in the life of John, Loyalty Team Leader: Tell us about yourself

Hi John, tell us a bit about yourself, what do you do?

I head up the Loyalty team here in the Southampton Office. We are a new team recently created to help us launch proposed new services to help our existing customer base.

So why did you decide to work for Bamboo, and what are your working hours?

I was very excited by the plans Bamboo had, the idea that it was a company with great ambition that wanted to breakthrough in the UK. I work a 37.5 hour week, something that was very attractive to me was the way the company promotes a healthy work life balance. For me it is about working very hard in the hours I am here, rather than working long hours and only being semi productive.

What was your background before you joined Bamboo?

I come from a financial services background, largely in insurance and loans. This includes a range of roles including collections, sales and training. Dare I admit it, I have also worked in politics, working for MPs in the House of Commons.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently undertaking training with existing members of staff, helping cross skill staff across all departments. I am also helping plan to launch our new Loyalty Team which should be taking shape very soon now.

What is your favourite part about working with Bamboo?

The people – we have a fantastic culture here, everyone gets on really well and we have a great culture of mutual respect. The atmosphere is really positive, and everyone here has a can do attitude – we don’t have office politics here I am proud to say!

Any favourite projects you’ve worked on?

The training is something I very much enjoyed – I have a passion for learning and development. I also enjoyed planning last year’s Christmas party, perhaps in later life I may start party planning!

Outside of the office, how do you spend your free time?

I am a comedy writer and spend a lot of my time writing scripts. I am also a recent recruit to the fitness world, I love running and long walks. My main passion though is spending time with my wife and my 2 year old son, he certainly helps keep me fit!

What would you say to people about Bamboo?

It is a great place to work, I genuinely enjoy coming in to work each day – the future is so exciting with the plans we have for expansion, and therefore as a new member of staff you can be assured that there will be great opportunities for career progression.

What are your top tips for being successful in the working environment?

Whatever you are asked to do, do it with 100% spirit and passion. Get your head down, focus and give it your best. Don’t be frightened to ask for help, learn from the best, found out who is recognised as the ‘best’ in your field at work and spend time with them and learn from them. Give yourself a personal target to work towards, this will help you focus. Finally, simply be nice and show everyone respect, this in turn will ensure you are respected back.

A day in the life of John: Tell us your daily routine

What does the typical day look like for you?

Day normally begins around 6am, breakfast is essential to me, normally boiled eggs or porridge. I then walk 2 miles to work listening to various podcasts and like an early start so normally get in around 8am and start planning my day.

I often head for a run or have a quick gym session on my lunch and then re-plan for the afternoon ahead. Depending on shift patterns I normally walk home and get home around 530pm and spend some time with my boy which normally involves trying to persuade him to eat vegetables!

I am a big believer in being there for his bedtime routine as much as possible and I have always read a story to him since he was a little baby. It’s then time to finally unwind with Dinner, some writing and a little TV – I am a huge fan of Only Fools and Horses and Sherlock! I am early to bed, normally aim to be asleep at 10pm to be refreshed for the following day!
